Ingredients
Passionflower: Passionflower (Passiflora incarnate) can be a very useful herb to promote relaxation and support sleep quality. Passionflower has been traditionally used for insomnia, anxiety, and pain relief. Passionflower increases GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) activity in the brain, contributing to its sedative effects, and one study has suggested that it may increase melatonin in the brain as well. GABA is a chemical messenger in your brain that essentially regulates mood and promotes calmness. There have been numerous studies on the effects of passionflower on sleep including a 2024 study that exhibited a significant reduction in stress and a significant increase in total sleep time in the participants compared to the placebo.
Lavender: Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is widely known for its soothing effects and lovely aroma. It is very popularly used in aromatherapy and can help relieve stress, anxiety, and headaches, as well as promote calmness and sleep. Incorporating lavender in tea makes for an effective bedtime routine as studies have shown it to support relaxation and sleep quality. The compounds in lavender interact with the central nervous system and enhance GABA activity in the brain, thus promoting a state of relaxation and potentially inducing sleep.
Chamomile: Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is another well-known herb known for its relaxing benefits and is commonly used in teas. Chamomile contains flavonoids and terpenoids that contribute to its sedative effects. A 2024 systematic review concluded that chamomile improved sleep, especially the number of awakenings after sleep or staying asleep.
Peppermint leaf: Some studies suggest that peppermint (Mentha piperita) may help calm anxiety and relax muscles, which then can lead to assisting with falling asleep. Peppermint is a nice addition to enhance flavor and it is also well-known to assist with sinuses, headaches, and fresh breath. A 2020 study demonstrated that inhaling lavender and peppermint may help reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.
